5th Generation Deer Lodge, Montana Ranchers

At the age of 18 years, Soren R. Beck came to the US from Denmark and arrived in New York with $2.25 in his pocket.  He went directly to the Montana Territory and settled in the Deer Lodge Valley in 1884, working for his Uncle Nels R. Beck.

In 1889 he leased 480 acres of land on the Little Blackfoot River, nine miles north of Deer Lodge and four miles east of Garrison.  His first success was raising horses. He also bought from the Indians and sold to the Army.  After five years in the horse business, he sold out and bought cattle and sheep.

In 1892 he and his wife (Christine) had their first child, Andrew A. Beck.  He and Soren formed a partnership and Andrew took over the original ranch at Garrison in 1910 at 18 years old.

Maggie Beck has been involved with horses and cattle on the Beck Ranch since birth.  She and her sister, Brandy, lived at the barn as kids.  They would sometimes pack a lunch, just in case they were too "busy" to make it back to the house.... which was about 100 yards away!  They had all kinds of horses growing up:  different ages, sizes, breeds, colors and they aquired all sorts of "hand me downs" & rejects that someone else didn't want.  When they were in high school they started selling off the ones that they didn't like and started purchasing ones they did.  Maggie bought her first two broodmares in 1997 and decided to start raising foals.  She bought breedings to studs that had good pedigrees and minds.  As the years went on, she bought and sold some mares until she

had her current day band of 4 mares.

In August of 2009 she purchased Roys A Good Mate from Fisher Equine.  He has a black type pedigree and is as good minded as it gets.  "RJ" pasture breeds and all of the mares pasture foal.  His first foals under her ownership were born in 2011.  If you talk to any proud owner of an RJ foal you will hear the same thing:

"They sure are easy to start!"

In 1917 Andrew and his wife (Mary) had their first child, Don W. "Bud" Beck.  Andrew formed a partnership with three of his sons:  Bud, Joe and Sam.  In addition to farming and ranching, they operated the International Harvester Dealership in Deer Lodge, called "Beck Equipment."  Andrew continued buying property around the valley.  He died in 1993 at the age of 101.

In 1945 Bud and his wife (Irene) had their first child, Don R. Beck.  Don R. married Jeannie Nelson in 1972, bringing with her a daughter, Dana M. (Ron) Daugherty.  Today the original Ranch is operated by Don R. and his three children:  Maggie Beck, Brandy (Jim) Davis and Don Jr. (Melanie) Beck.

Bud aquired three additional ranches that are run by his oldest son, Don R. Beck and his youngest son, Dave Beck.... with the help of the whole family!

The original Beck Ranch Property has been in the family for over 120 years.  It was started in 1889 by Soren R. Beck and it has been handed down through the generations.

Bud passed away in 2013 at the age of 96.

Maggie & Brandy grace the cover
